By order of the Tsar
Already a great fan of Louis Roederer’s Champagne, in 1876 Tsar Alexander II put in a special request for a unique wine of superlative quality and presentation for his own consumption. Some say that the Tsar even specified the bottle should have a flat bottom to deter potential assassins from stuffing the dent with explosives. Delighted by the opportunity to please the Tsar, Roederer promised a fine, silky champagne which would be presented in a white crystal bottle. Made with the strictest criteria, selecting only the finest grapes from the best vineyards, Cristal became the domain’s most prestigious offering.

Back by popular request…
Following the downfall of the Tsars in 1917, the estate continued making the wine to distribute internationally and it immediately became a commercial success, always in high demand because of its rarity. The wine is only produced when the grapes are at their best resulting in an elegant, silky champagne with a perfectly subtle balance between the Chardonnay and Pinot noir.
